From Bell’s Palsy to Acupuncture Facelift

May 4th, 2010

Bell’s Palsy is one of the most common diseases of the facial nerves. Each year, about 40,000 Americans develop Bell’s palsy, a condition that occurs when the nerve that controls the facial muscles becomes swollen or compressed. The symptoms include sudden onset of one side facial droop and difficulty with facial expressions, pain behind or in front of ear on the affected side, headache, loss of taste, changes in the amount of tears and saliva.

BELL’S PALSY AS A TEENAGER

In traditional Chinese medicine, Bell’s palsy is thought to result from an obstruction of Qi (vital energy) and blood in certain areas that leads to malnourishment of the tendons and muscles. Acupuncture has been used in treating a wide range of facial problems from Bell’s palsy to facial paralysis caused by stroke as well as many others. Clinical researches showed when acupuncture was initiated within three days post-onset of facial nerve paralysis, nearly 100 percent of the patients could be cured or there was a marked improvement.

“Acupuncture Facelift” evolved out of treatments devised for Bell’s palsy. Inaddition to an improvement in paralysis, researchers applying electric stimulation to traditional acupuncture points on the face noted a dramatic improvement in the appearance of the skin, with improved muscle tone, more even skin coloration, and a diminishing of wrinkles and fine lines. This technique is a non-surgical approach to enhance the health of the face and create a youthful, vibrant appearance as an alternative to the traditional facelift.

Although less dramatic and rapid than conventional plastic surgery, an “acupuncture facelift” is ideal for those seeking a natural-looking reduction in the signs of aging without the costs and risks of surgery. In addition to those seeking to reduce visible signs of aging, this therapy helps those with younger skin who just want to look better or prevent the early signs of aging. It can be used in conjunction with traditional surgery as a means of maximizing and prolonging the effects. Unlike surgery, no substantial health risks are associated with this alternative procedure. Also, this therapy does not result in an overly thin, stretched skin appearance, and may improve skin thickness and elasticity. Furthermore, the procedure is not painful; most people find it relaxing—many fall asleep during the one hour procedure.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, a person’s face is affected selectively by his or her internal organs. As internal organs are fortified, one’s face reflects the improvement. Acupuncture facelift is, after all, a whole-body treatment. Since facial acupuncture is based on time-tested principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a person’s overall health may also benefit. Insomnia may be corrected, weight gain may be controlled, and the symptoms of disorders such as allergic rhinitis and rosacea may be reduced.

The number of treatments required to see results really varies depending on what the goals of the patient are, and how much skin damage a person has. Generally, most people receive between 6 and 20 treatments, with healthier skin requiring less. Some people like to use it on as needed basis just to help them look best for special events such as weddings, parties, and in that case a person may receive only one or two treatments.

Generally, acupuncture facelift may offer reduction or erasure of fine lines and the softening of deeper ones. Patients may experience the firming of jowls and a reduction in the size of under-eye bags. It is not unusual for patients to report enhanced skin tone, increased energy and sparkling eyes. Many people take good care of themselves, eat well, and exercise, but they don’t have an exercise regimen for the face. This procedure can be seen as a type of exercise for the face, and results in a more relaxed, refreshed look that people feel good about.

Remember, it take decades of stress, sun damage and exposure to environmental toxins for your skin to reach a state of crisis, and the damage will not be instantly undone. Optimal health and wellness are the foundation to youthful complexion. It requires work on the patient’s part in integrating acupuncture with healthy lifestyle and fitness, and addressing the root cause. Through the process, a qualified practitioner can help you not only to present a younger face to the world but also achieve a healthier, youthful and vital you.

Hope this helps

HELPING YOU FEEL AND LOOK GREAT INSIDE AND OUT

According to CDC, during the past 20 years, there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States. The prevalence of overweight and obesity continues to be a health concern for adults, children and adolescents in this country.

Being overweight or obese increases the risk of many diseases and healthconditions. These include–

  • Coronary heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
  • Stroke
  • Liver and Gallbladder disease
  • Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
  • Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
  • Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)

Weight gain may be due to allergies to food or food intolerances. Stress can lead to weight gain. Hormone imbalances, such as insulin, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid hormones, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are associated with weight gain and obesity. Exposure to toxins, nutrition, psychological issues, free radical production and inflammation, and abnormal gut flora secondary to yeast and overuse of antibiotics all can initiate the problem of weight gain.

Weight gain and obesity are very complex medical disorders that require a multifaceted approach. No one single eating program or weight loss method works for everyone, so it is important to individualize and customize your program.

It is essential to seek the aid of a practitioner who offers holistic and integrative medical services and functional approach
